There are a number of places where modern, western Christians have altered basic teachings of Scripture. Christians need to be sure that they are following what the Scripture actually teaches, not what a pastor, priest or church says the Scripture does:

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works. (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

You need to check what you are following:

Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates? (2 Corinthians 13:5)

You also need to check your church, pastor, or priest:

These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so. (Acts 17:11)

If your church is not teaching the Scripture correctly, you may need to consider finding another church.  See my page on Churches to Avoid.  However, note that no church is perfect; and all churches will deviate at some point.
